How to Make Money Online: 3 Levels Beginners Must Know.

Six years ago, I was a school teacher. I enjoyed teaching, but the problem was simple: my salary could barely provide three square meals or cover basic needs. That frustration pushed me to explore different ways to make money online.

After years of trials, errors, and perseverance, I finally started earning on the side while still keeping my full-time job. Looking back, I wish someone had explained the process clearly—so I wouldn’t waste so much time jumping from one niche to another.

That’s why I created this guide. In this post, I’ll break down the three levels of making money online:

  1. Rendering services

  2. Marketing and selling products

  3. Building and leveraging an audience

Let’s dive in.

Why Making Money Online Matters

Money plays a major role in our happiness and fulfillment. Most of us spend 70–80% of our time working for money, yet still struggle to pay bills. This pressure has even pushed some people—especially youths—into shortcuts like scams and cybercrime.

But here’s the truth: you can make money online legitimately without cutting corners. The key is providing value people are willing to pay for.

As the saying goes:

“To make millions, provide value to millions.”

Level 1: Make Money Online by Rendering Services

The fastest entry point into online income is offering services. Services fall into two categories:

  • Skilled services – coding, web design, video editing, graphic design, copywriting, social media management, trading, etc.

  • Unskilled or micro-tasks – answering surveys, data entry, crypto faucets, airdrops, click-to-earn games, or micro task platforms like SproutGigs (formerly Picoworkers).

💡 Pro Tip: Overlap both. Start with micro tasks for quick wins, while learning a digital skill for long-term income.

Mistakes I Made as a Beginner

When I started, I avoided tasks requiring skills. I stuck to micro-tasks, earning my first $5 online. Later, I realized I should have focused on building real skills alongside those quick wins.

That’s when I began learning coding (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and exploring blogging. Although I quit coding too early, the lesson was clear: acquire skills that scale.

Level 2: Make Money Online by Selling Products

Once you master a skill, the next level is selling products. This can be physical or digital:

1. Sell Physical Products

  • Partner with manufacturers or wholesalers and resell their products online.

  • Start dropshipping (sell products without holding inventory).

2. Sell Digital Products

This is the most scalable option because digital products have no reproduction or distribution cost. Examples:

  • eBooks

  • Online courses

  • Templates

  • Apps or software

When I started blogging, I also created an Amazon Affiliate account. By recommending books that helped me, I could earn commissions when people bought through my links. That’s affiliate marketing in action.

Level 3: Build and Leverage an Audience

This is the highest level of online income—because once you have an audience, you can monetize in multiple ways.

  • Sell your own products

  • Promote affiliate products

  • Get sponsorships

  • Run ads

Think of creators like Ali Abdaal, Thomas Frank, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Austin Kleon. They’ve built massive audiences by giving away valuable content consistently. Later, they leveraged their platforms to sell books, courses, and products.

For example, Ali Abdaal spent years sharing productivity tips on YouTube before releasing his book Feel Good Productivity, which became a New York Times bestseller.

Building an audience takes time, but it’s worth it—because loyal followers become your ambassadors.

Key Lessons from My Online Money Journey

  1. Play the long game – Don’t chase overnight riches. Focus on skills and growth.

  2. Avoid scams – Stay away from get-rich-quick schemes. Always research reviews on Google or Trustpilot.

  3. Learn before investing – I lost money in forex because I rushed in. If you want to trade, master your strategy and practice with a demo account for at least six months.

  4. Start small, scale later – Begin with services, transition to products, and then grow an audience.

Final Thoughts

Making money online isn’t magic. It’s a journey of patience, skills, and consistency.

Start with services, grow into products, and eventually leverage your audience. This roadmap works whether you’re a student, a teacher like I was, or someone just looking for extra income.

If you want to go deeper, I recommend:

  • Show Your Work by Austin Kleon

  • Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk

These books shaped how I see online business and audience-building.
