My four hour work day

My four hour work day

 Weekly review

by Umeh valentine on 27, march, 2024

Am so sorry, this is coming late. I ended last week with no tasks completed. I was trying to shoot my first video, but it is not going as I thought. To Make a complete sentence takes me more than 6 shots. I was frustrated, but I remember the words of Goerth, "everything is hard before it is easy." I persisted and did not give up. This is what I say beneath my thoughts.

  • Yes, they say practice makes one to be better, but i'm telling myself today even though better did not come, I will keep on doing my best even if it is not worth calling best.

  •  One thing is to set expectations and another thing is to accept the results of your effort. I'm on the right path and I'm still growing and getting better.

  • Having too many expectations for yourself will lead to chronic dissatisfaction. The key is to learn how to enjoy the process. And always go back to the basics.

This week I will go back to the basics  of what Tim Ferris called "the new rich" in his book "The four hour work week." He explained with clear examples that some people spend almost 8-9 hours in their workplace and are not productive while others spend within 4 hours or less and are more productive. He also explains how to focus on the important tasks and be effective in delivering your tasks.

I want to highlight some of the lessons I learnt and how I will apply it in my life.

  1. Be among the new rich

He refers to the new rich as entrepreneurs whose goal is to increase their revenue with less work. "My day job takes 9 hours from Monday to Saturday and my income does not commensurate with my input."

I asked myself questions after I felt a slight discomfort in my heart as I was working. I Am working 8 hours plus for six days. But my income cannot take care of my needs, not even my health. I was thinking what if I break down. How will I take care of myself? This thought was a negative one but It awakened my consciousness, I don't want my income to be on monthly salary. I could remember what happened during the convid19 we could not go to work and we weren't paid through that period.

Everything is clear to survive, I need to be an entrepreneur. see a problem and find a solution. That is why I started my side project. if I am lucky to scale it up to a profitable business. I need to focus on my project though, it is not paying for now. Am just sharing something valuable and am hoping to monetize it in future.

  1. He talks about Pareto principle

Doing less meaningless work so that I can focus on things of greater personal importance to me. This is hard for most of us to accept because our culture tends to reward personal sacrifice instead of personal productivity.

Pareto principle briefs me that 80% of the results come from 20% of the effort and time.

I analyzed how I spent my time at work doing time-wasting activities. I also asked myself, what is the 20% of work that will lead to 80% percent of the progress in my project. and what are the top-three activities that I use to fill time to feel as though I’ve been productive?

The list was as follows: reading, writing, and teaching. I also listed the things I waste most of my time on. My work does not actively consume 8 hrs plus, there is some free time. I spent most of my free time doing nothing. Discussing with my co-workers, making unnecessary arguments about football or trying to convince or explain things for them to get my perspective.

I have been wasting my free time, but I want to use it to draft an article, or newsletter or read more books. I have placed a reminder on my phone with "Is okay to draft an article or newsletter." In fact, " I am drafting this newsletter in my free time." I am always happy when I do something meaningful during my free time though it does not happen all the time.

  1. He talks about parkins law

Parkinson's law briefs me that work expands to fill the time allotted for its completion.

My timing always needs improvement. I observed that articles take almost one week  to write. This is not good for my progress. I will learn how to finish any task at the given time.

I will use Parkinson’s Law to accomplish more in less time. Shorten schedules and deadlines to necessitate focused action instead of deliberation and procrastination.

Tim called Parkinson's law, the magic of the imminent deadline. He explained "I give you 24 hours to complete a project, the time pressure forces you to focus on execution, and you have no choice but to do only the bare essentials. If I give you a week to complete the same task, it’s six days of making a mountain out of a molehill. If I give you two months, God forbid, it becomes a mental monster."

I want to be a fan of working effectively and not working all the time. Work is better when it is more effective or more fun. Being Effective is doing the things that get me closer to my goals. This is what I am striving for.

  1. Batching similar task

I will try to batch similar tasks. Let's start with two different similar groups that are similar. social media-related activities at a specific time. Writing articles, newsletters, videos and podcast scripts at a specific time. My circle will increase later, this is just an experiment.

THE THINGS I ENJOYED THIS WEEK!
