How to understand motivation and master consistency

My friend once asked me how to be motivated and do more. He always lacks the motivation to do his side projects and other tasks that are gear towards delayed gratification.

I used to have issues with "motivation."  But After I read the motivation myth by Jeff Haden, I now have a different perspective. I've fully internalized the notion that motivation comes after success or making progress. If you want to stay motivated, if you want to stay on task, if you want to keep making progress toward the things you hope to achieve, then enjoy small, minor successes on a regular basis. I think we’d all be much happier, and energized to do more if we could change our mindset about motivation. In the article, we are going to discuss how motivation works and explore the following subtopics.

  • Understand how motivation works.
  • The impact of motivation on the brain.
  • How to improve motivation.

Understand how motivation works:

motivation according to Wikipedia is a state that propels individuals to engage in goal-directed behavior.

Motivation can be intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation arises within an individual while extrinsic motivation is to receive gifts such as money, trophies and even praises as a reward. This article mainly focuses on how motivation works.

To accomplish anything worthwhile, and especially to achieve a goal, you don't wait to be hit by a lightning bolt of inspiration or motivation. ( Motivation is the fire that starts burning after you manually coax it into existence, and it feeds on the satisfaction of seeing yourself make progress.)

You have to put in effort. There are no shortcuts. The only way is the hard way. Although it is hard, there are plenty of ways to make the process fun, and uplifting, and enjoy the journey.  you can permit yourself to enjoy hard work by reframing what you tell yourself. Just Mentally recognizing effort and telling yourself that the effort is the good part, tends to make you endure and enjoy difficult tasks and this is reflective to all kinds of effort.

The impact of motivation on the brain 🧠

The reward system comprises the neurons and it is communicated using dopamine. When the molecule of dopamine is highlighted in the brain, it enables us to create things, pursue our goals and do new things.

Your ability to tap into dopamine as a motivator and not just seeking dopamine as a reward is infinite. Your ability to internally reward effort tickles the feel-good socket in the brain. Which makes the brain release endorphins (the natural feel good drugs in the brain). It makes you hone on hard work in the future. To Understand how the release of dopamine makes you enjoy doing work, both an easy and difficult task. This is how our creator made us, we can give ourselves the permission to like and dislike anything.
How do you do this? It Is by consistently craving and telling yourself you love or dislike anything.  It tends to make you love or hate that highlighted thing.

How to improve motivation?

Find your purpose

We were created for a purpose. The Purpose is the thing we were created to do. We were not created by an accident nor to huddle under the blanket and stay warm. The biggest source of motivation is to have a reason to do a task. If you want to be a writer, write every day you don't need motivation just write. Your purpose will give you the internal desire, drive and motivation to propel you forward to your goal.

Focus on mini-milestones

Build a practical action plan and commit to the little action that will lead to your Goal. Celebrating your small win internally, will enhance motivation and make you feel proud of yourself.

Remember satisfaction, fulfillment, and happiness can be found in achievement… but the real source of consistent, lasting happiness lies in the process. Learn to enjoy the process and you will never in your life.

Conclusion

Want to be happier, and more successful at everything you choose to pursue? The paths to both happiness and success are the same. You don’t need to wait until you find more time; you have all the time you need. You don’t need to wait until you find more money; money never drives success. And you do not need more motivation. You don’t need to wait to find your passion; Don't focus on what you don’t have, because what you have is more than enough.  Just start doing it. You should recognise craving and seeking as the internal release drug for reward to make you motivated to pursue your goals.
