My Online Journey
I have a fixed mindset about online though I’ve not been active for many years. I used to say that it distracts me from concentrating on what I should do, and secondly, people are living fake lives online therefore, nothing good can come from online, it is just a waste of time.
After I met Ali Abdaal on YouTube and watched some of his videos. I was like whoa! It blew my mind, and my perspective changed. One thing I love in his videos is how he demystifies, and explains things clearly, even a six-year-old can understand him. He shows the entire process and even references his source of knowledge, inspiration, and challenges. Ali is taking advantage of different social media by generously sharing his ideas and knowledge. He has gained a large audience that he leverages for fellowship, feedback or patronage.
Being online is not a bad thing; it enables us to connect with family and friends.
The internet is a massive co-creating project. I don't need to be perfect or have a perfect article. I need to see online as a playground where I can bring my unfinished projects, learn and get new ideas from other people. I can remember playing with other kids in a playground, We always challenge ourselves and, learn new things like acrobatic skills that I can still do today.
Online is a place of learning and collaborating with other people. I have decided to start sharing my work, and my daily routine. I will show behind the scenes of my work, the current project that is in progress. If you are anything like me, you love learning, feel free to take whatever you like. I want to use social media to show my journey online and offline. To share the things that make me happy and am passionate about. I will share some strategies I used to optimize different aspects of my life. I will share the lessons I learned and my source of inspiration. Please feel free to share your experience, recommendation or feedback.
Since creativity can be demystified as a way of operating, sharing your work online is still part of creativity. "Show Your Work" is the book I recommend you to read if you want to start your journey online. It is a kind of beginner’s manual. show your work is for people who hate the idea of self-promotion. self-promotion is an endless process, share your process in a way that attracts people who might be interested in what you do, and how to deal with the ups and downs of putting yourself and your work out in the world.
Online becomes a problem when we cannot exercise discipline ourselves to know when to be online and offline. As Tim Kreider said, “It’s hard to find anything to say about life without immersing yourself in the world, but it’s also just about impossible to figure out what it might be, or how to best say it, without getting the hell out of it again.”
Austin Kleon said, "Creativity is about connection, you must be connected to others in order to be inspired and share your own work, but it is also about disconnection. You must retreat from the world long enough to think, practice your art, and bring forth something worth sharing with others. You must play a little hide-and-seek in order to produce something worth being found."
He recommended a workspace. To get the full gist read "Keep going ". In his words "You must have a room, or a certain hour or so a day, where you don’t know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don’t know who your friends are, you don’t know what you owe anybody, you don’t know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be. This is the place of creative incubation. At first, you may find that nothing happens there. But if you have a sacred place and use it, something eventually will happen."
