Here Are The 6 Tips To Become A Great Artist
1. Every Artists Steal From Other Artists.
2. We Learn By Copying And Imitating Others.
3. Phobia of original content.
4. Give your Attention To What You Love.
5. Build Your Own House.
6. Save Your Idea For Later
1. Every Artists Steals From Other Artists.
Every artists steal from as their source of inspiration. Picasso said "good artists borrow, great artists steal." The ability to choose what to leave out makes art work interesting, and Your ability to know the right thing to add, or subtract may make you a great artist. The first thing is to know what you want. know the people that are doing what you want to do. Next, know something worth stealing.
There is nothing like bad or good. Capture any ideas that resonate with you. Most of the problems, challenges and struggles we face today have been there over the years and many great men have solved it already. Your job is to find the solution and process they use. remember matthew 7:7 says "Ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you." If you didn't see it today, you may find it tomorrow, next month or even next year.
I have started using the idea recently and I really appreciate it gradually. When I watch YouTube, read books, listen to podcasts, I try to keep note of what resonates with me. I take note of my own words. Just as
David Bowie said "The only art I’ll ever study is stuff that I can steal from.”
2. We Learn By Copying And Imitating Others.
We were not born with a style of speaking. Humans learn by copying. Yohji Yamamoto said "Start copying what you love. Copy copy copy copy. At the end of the copy, you will find yourself."
We all started by copying others. We learn to write by copying down the alphabet. We learn how to talk by copying our parents, those around us and even from our teachers. Musicians learn to play by practicing scales. Painters learn to paint by reproducing masterpieces. Copying is only a problem when you copy from one person. It makes you the lesser version of that person and you are seen as fake. When you copy from different people and remix it, it gives you your own real style. We practice what other people are doing, plus our own style.
St Paul also encourages us we should us to imitate him, just as he imitates Christ.
3. Phobia Of Original Content
All artists understand that nothing was created from nowhere. All artwork builds from what came before. Creativity started from one situation or another in the past. Everything in life starts from something. Nothing can exist from nothing to some. Only God has the power to create something from nothing Genesis 1:1
When people say something is original they don't know the reference. It is written, nothing is hidden under the sun Ecclesiastes 1:9. Don't get depressed or worry if they say your content is not original. As the writer Jonathan Lethem said that when people call something “original,” nine out of ten times they just don’t know the references or the original sources involved.
" What is original? Undetected plagiarism" - William ralph inge
4. Give Your Attention To What You Love.
An artist is a collector, he collects ideas that he loves, He collects selectively and remixes them. When you keep piling up good ideas in the long run you will be influenced in your thinking, and also in your doings. As Epictetus said "You become what you give your attention to."
Austin kleon added "You’re only going to be as good as the stuff you surround yourself with. My mom used to say to me, “Garbage in, garbage out.” It used to drive me nuts. But now I know what she meant. Your job is to collect good ideas. The more good ideas you collect, the more you can choose from to be influenced by."
Jim Jarmusch said "steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic.”
5. Build Your Own House.
Find three or more people in any field that you love.
It can be musicians, novelists, content creators and so on. Study their artwork. Practice it, Repeat it as much as you can. Follow their part, be an apprentice. The importance of being an apprentice is you can choose what you want to learn from them until you find your structure. Learn how to construct buildings, then start building your own house.
My friend Ali Abdaal started his blog after he listened to a podcast by Derek Sivers and Tim ferriss in 2016. He added YouTube, podcasts, online courses plus other stuff on the side as a student, and today he has built multiple streams of income from them.
6. Save Your Idea For Later.
Move around with a pen and paper or digital system, take note of events, conversations, take pictures of anything that resonates, put them in your file or folder. When you need inspiration, open up your file or folder.
“It is better to take what does not belong to you than to let it lie around neglected.”—Mark Twain
